If you’re a property owner, business manager, or facilities coordinator, you may have heard the term DDA compliant ramps. But what does it really mean, and why is it important — especially here in Stratford-upon-Avon and the wider Warwickshire area?

DDA stands for the Disability Discrimination Act, which was introduced in 1995 to protect the rights of disabled people. While the DDA has since been largely replaced by the Equality Act 2010, the term DDA compliance is still commonly used when referring to accessibility standards — particularly in relation to ramps.

A DDA compliant ramp ensures that wheelchair users and those with limited mobility can safely and comfortably access a building. Key features include:

  • A gentle gradient (ideally 1:15 or 1:20 for longer ramps)
  • Handrails on both sides for stability and support
  • A non-slip surface to reduce the risk of slipping
  • Sufficient width (at least 1 metre) for wheelchair users
  • Landing platforms at the top, bottom, and at intervals on longer ramps

Whether for a private home, commercial premises, or public building, a DDA compliant ramp helps make your space more inclusive — and ensures you’re meeting current UK accessibility guidelines.
